Just Got This New Blocking Mat
I wanted to share with you a little video review of this new blocking mat I just bought. It’s called the Block and Roll by Bag Smith.
I first saw it at the Stitches West show a few years back and was intrigued with it. I like it’s portability and size, but the cost was a little high. I finally took the plunge and bought it and I’m very glad I did. I go more into what I like about it in the video below.

I’ve been wanting one of these, but in the service of frugality and ingenuity, instead picked up set of 2′ x 2′ relatively heavy duty interlocking foam tiles (intended to provide cushioning for a garage work space so they’re black) with a textured grid pattern at Costco. They came in a set of 8 (for $14), so I’ve been able to block really large items on them. You can move the individual squares around like the Block & Roll mat if you’re working with something that fits on a 2 ft sqare tile, and though these mats aren’t as elegant, I have to say they work pretty well. I’ve been trying decide if it’s possible/worth the effort to try to paint the gridlines, which are very conveniently in one inch increments. So far, I’ve been pinning tape measures on the x and y axis lines and it works pretty well.
One of my concerns with the Block and Roll was how it would hold up over the long run, so I’ll be curious to see how yours does. Thanks for the great review!

I’ll have to do a follow up after I use it for awhile so we can see how well it holds up. I’m not sure how well tape would stick to your mats but you could get that really skinny tape from the office store and tape the grid if painting sees too labor intensive. Just a thought. 🙂
