    Hi Deja,

Love what you do and I tell everyone that you were crucial in helping me learn so much! But I do have a question – The first method I learned for crocheting in the round (from you) was a spiral, so I was surprised in the Baby Bear Beanie that it was joined with a slip stitch, but then the ears are spiral!

How do you determine when it is best to use a spiral method or slip-stitch to join when crocheting in the round?
    Thanks!

    • Deja Joy

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Plus working in a spiral creates an offset. For the beanie I wanted the brim to be even. The ears are sewn on and you can see the offset. 🙂

    • Deja Joy

I join with a slip stitch when I want an even border. The spiral gives a visible offset. With the ears because they are sewn on, you can hide that offset.

I’m making my fiancée a messy bun hat. His head is about 24 inches around. How much do I alter the pattern? I’ve tried adding another round and increasing it 60 sts. So the pattern would be round 1 would be 24 sts, round 2 would be 36 sts, round 3 would be 48 sts ,and round 4 would be 60 sts. I tried it that way and I used a bulky 5 weight yarn and a L crochet hook. It was too big when he tried it on. I also tried using a K crochet hook, it didn’t turn out well either. I watched your tutorial on gauging and I think I have the basic concept down, but I don’t think my problem is gauging. I think it’s the actual pattern and how many sts I need for each round. Any advice to help me figure this out would be most welcome.

Hi! I made your messy bun hat and I love it! It fits great but the bun hole is a little too small. Is there a way to increase the size of just the bun hole? Thanks so much!

Pattern from Crochet Ever after for the Gretel’s cupcake purse has an error I think. For the frosting, from round 9 things don’t seem to add up.

i came across your site and love it. your videos are wonderful. you are one of the best teachers and explain everything so well. i watched some of your videos on You Tube and on your website. you mentioned a video where you explain swatches. i can’t find it. can you please point me in the right direction for that video? i want to crochet a throw and the swatch is not exact. i am using a 3 weight yarn and I hook. thanks so much

    • Deja Jetmir

Hi there, depending on the shapes you want to use. They are not all the same size so you would have to either think about piecing them together. Or going with circles and piece them together, they would probably be easier to piece together.

Purchased the owl beanie hat. Very confusing to me. There are commas in places where they shouldn’t be. I have read it backwards and forwards to try to make sense of it. Example is in round 22, ” ch1, *SC in next 2 ST, with MCA, SC next 2 STS, with CC, SC in next 3STS, with MCA, SC in next 13 STS, with CC, SC in the next 3STS, with MCA, SC next 6STS, with CC, SC* repeat *-*.
So I am assumed that you were saying, * SC in next 2ST with MCA, SC 2 STS with CC, SC next 3 STS with MCA, SC in next 13 STS with CC, SC in next 3STS with MCA, SC in the next 6STS with CC, SC*. The last instruction for the SC don’t know what color I am suppose to use. So I read it backwards and it still doesn’t work out . Please help!

    • Deja Jetmir

Hi there, the color changes can be quite daunting in the written portion of the pattern. When reading the color changes, they come before the stitches to be worked. If there is no color change showing at the beginning of the RND (as with the example above), you will simply be using the color you finished the previous round with. So when it states, with MCA, you will change to MCA and then work the next STS it states after that color. The special instructions right before the color changes portion of the pattern state this as well in case you need a reminder while working so you don’t have to come back to the computer. 🙂

    • Deja Jetmir

Hi Karen, You will join just like as if you were joining a new color. Work up to the last part of the stitch and grab the new yarn instead of the old to pull though the loops on your hook. 🙂

Hi there, there is an option during paypal checkout to checkout as a guest and use your card if you like. Or if you want to head to Etsy, my patterns are there as well and they have a direct checkout system that takes cards without paypal at all. 🙂

I saw one of your videos on YouTube and it was very helpful to me. I’m learning to crochet again. I remember just a few simple crochet stitches so I am learning quickly lots of new stitches for the first time.
I appreciate your advice now and then.

Thanks for choosing me as a winner. I never win anything. Guess that’s not true anymore.
I’m a little unclear on how to receive the prize. Tried to find out but couldn’t locate any instructions.
What a wonderful surprise. Can’t wait to do something wonderful with my prize. When I finish I’ll be sure to post picture. Thanks for an early birthday present. (I’m a Scorpio)

    • Deja Jetmir

Oh no, I’m sorry you aren’t the Kim that won. 🙁 I would’ve added a last initial but the Kim that won only left Kim for a name. I contact the winner by email and then post the comment they left on the winner page. So sorry about that.

Hi Deja ….. just found you on Youtube and subscribed. Great videos. You are the FIRST person who ever explained the the height issue with the “golden loop”! Thank you!! Do you have a FB page?

  • ladyloneill

Thank you, Deja. You’re a gifted teacher. I’m so glad I found your site.
One suggestion: When posting a comment, would you consider having people authorize themselves using their Google account. I think it would be much more efficient. As it is now, I type a comment, then am sent to a page that asks me to sign in to WordPress, after which I’m presented with a blank comment field in fill in all over again. Curious arrangement.

    • crocheteverafter

Thanks so much for the kind words! I am not sure I was trying to find out why the comments is having you do the extra step. I have it set up where you can leave a comment without being signed in, but it doesn’t give me an option for Google authorization. I’ll have to investigate it further. Thanks for pointing that out.

    • crocheteverafter

Okay I think I found it. I tried to leave a comment without being logged in. There are four tiny icons next to the comment box where you can log in to wordpress, google etc before leaving your comment. Then it will autofill your info into the comment fields. Could you see those icons?

My apologies if I’ve overlooked the instruction, but do you have a tip or tutorial on how to change colors? I’m crocheting a simple beginner’s blanket. Thanks.

Hi Deja – FIrst, let me say your tutorials are excellent. They have helped me with things like straight seams in the round 🙂 I found your tutorial on making a custom beanie in double crochet and the part that outlines how many rounds to do and what hook size is very helpful. So, I’m wondering if you have a similar tutorial for a custom beanie in half double crochet? I’m always having to play around to get it right. Many thanks. Darcy

    • crocheteverafter

Thanks so much for the kind words! I truly do appreciate them. Now for your question. I don’t actually have a tutorial on making a half double beanie yet, but I can definitely work on one. In the mean time, you can pretty much follow the double crochet instructions with just one change. Instead of doing 12 stitches in the first round and increasing by 12 until you get the correct size, you will instead only do multiples of 8.

Since it’s a shorter stitch, you only need 8 to get it to lay flat. I’m guessing it will only be a couple extra rounds to get it to the right size. Also you may want to work in spirals on half double, check out my straight seam in half double for the reason on that. 🙂 Let me know if you need any other help!
