March 2014: Starfish Granny
This tutorial will show you how to make what I am calling a starfish granny. Included in this tutorial is an introduction to the standing double crochet join. This is used to join a new strand of yarn without using a SL ST and CH beginning.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Every tutorial on standing double crochet I’ve seen, they held the hook like a pencil, which is awkward for me. I hold the hook using the knife or overhand position. Thanks again!

So I am also new to all this. How do you take this/ any Motif and make it into a blanket. You mentioned it but I don’t know how. PS love that I can watch these on my Roku.

Hi there, depending on the motif, you can either keep making it bigger. So the starfish has a simple repeat that just grows by one stitch each RND, so you would just keep going until you want to stop. The other option is to make lots of small motifs and then join them to make a bigger project. So you can connect the starfishes at the points. I have joining videos to show different ways to do this. π

I am a beginner crocheter. I absolutely love your tips…how to count the stitches and rows. Your tutorial is easy to see and you explain exactly what you are doing and why. Fabulous. Carol
