5 Essential Tools Every Crocheter Should Invest In

While crochet hooks and yarn are undoubtedly the most fundamental tools for any crocheter, there are several other accessories and gadgets that can enhance your crochet experience. In this post, I will explore the five best tools that every crocheter should consider adding to their collection. These tools will not only make your crocheting more enjoyable but also help you achieve better results. Let’s dive in! (affiliate links included)

1. Stitch Markers

Stitch markers are invaluable tools for crocheters of all skill levels. These small, often colorful, rings or clips are placed on specific stitches to mark important points in a pattern. Stitch markers help you keep track of your progress, identify stitch repeats, or highlight areas that require special attention. They are particularly useful for complex patterns, making it easier to count stitches and avoid mistakes. With a variety of options available, from traditional rings to lockable markers, you can choose the style that suits your preferences.

One important note on choosing stitch markers for crochet. Do not choose anything that has a closed ring. Any closed ring that is marked “stitch marker” is for knit only. These slide from needle to needle when working projects. These cannot be used in crochet because of how the stitches are formed. They will be “locked” into the project if you crochet them in. Only purchase locking, or open-type stitch markers. Some of my favorites are below.

2. Yarn Swift and Ball Winder

If you frequently work with yarn hanks, investing in a yarn swift and ball winder is a game-changer. These tools help you transform messy and tangled skeins into neat, center-pull yarn cakes. A yarn swift holds the hank in place, allowing it to spin smoothly as you wind the yarn onto the ball winder. This process not only organizes your yarn but also eliminates tension issues while crocheting. The resulting yarn cakes are easy to store, transport, and work with, ensuring a hassle-free crocheting experience. The ball winder is also a great tool to wind leftover yarn from projects to keep them in neat little yarn cakes for storage.

3. Blocking Tools

Blocking is the process of shaping and setting your finished crocheted projects to achieve a more polished and professional appearance. Blocking tools, such as blocking mats, T-pins, and blocking wires, play a crucial role in this process. Blocking mats provide a padded surface on which you can lay out your project, while T-pins and blocking wires help you stretch and secure the project to the desired shape and size. Whether you’re working on garments, shawls, or accessories, blocking tools will give your projects a refined look and enhance the drape of the fabric.

4. Crochet Project Bag

Keeping your crochet projects organized and portable is essential, and a dedicated crochet project bag can make a significant difference. These bags are specifically designed to accommodate your ongoing projects, hooks, patterns, and other accessories. Look for a bag with multiple compartments and pockets to store your yarn, tools, and even a small notebook or tablet for patterns. Additionally, a bag with sturdy handles or a comfortable shoulder strap will make it convenient to carry your crochet projects wherever you go, ensuring that you never have to leave your projects behind.

5. Stitch Counter

For crocheters tackling complex patterns or projects with intricate stitch counts, a stitch counter is a must-have tool. A stitch counter helps you keep track of the number of stitches or rows completed, ensuring accuracy and reducing the chances of mistakes. It eliminates the need to rely on memory or manually mark off completed sections. Some stitch counters come with additional features like built-in timers, multiple counters, and even memory functions. Whether it’s a simple mechanical counter or a digital one, this tool will save you time and make your crochet sessions more organized.

Here is a great digital counter and manual counter depending on what your preferences are.

Conclusion

As a crocheter, having the right tools can significantly enhance your experience and help you create beautiful projects with ease. While crochet hooks and yarn are the obvious essentials, investing in additional tools like stitch markers, yarn swift and ball winder, blocking tools, crochet project bags, and stitch counters can greatly improve your crocheting journey. These tools not only provide convenience but also contribute to the quality and professionalism of your finished projects. So, equip yourself with these five essential tools and get ready to take your crochet skills to the next level! Happy crocheting!
