Crochet Stitches Used For The Pattern
For the pattern, you will be using all of the basics: single, double and treble crochet. If you are new to crochet, click on the stitches to be taken to a beginner tutorial that will walk you through step-by-step before you start the project.
Suggested Yarn
The pictured pattern used Loops & Threads Soft Classic yarn. This is a great budget yarn with beautiful colors. If substituting yarn, choose any worsted weight yarn. I used the following colors and yardage.
approx. 175 yards of Coral (VS130) CA

Crochet Hook Used For Pattern
You will need a 6mm [US-J] crochet hook for this project.
After testing numerous brands of crochet hooks, I’ve narrowed down my favorites. Below, you’ll find my top picks, ranked from least to most expensive.

Additional Supplies Needed
You will need a pair of purse handles. Any shape or color will do, just be sure they have at least a 5″ opening so your granny square fits comfortably through it.
The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.
Gauge For Pattern
Gauge is not super important for this pattern, but using the recommended yarn and hook, your finished granny squares should measure approx. 8″ across.

Special Stitches Used in Pattern
TR6TOG: YO hook twice, insert hook through first ST, YO, pull up through ST, YO, pull up loop through two STS, YO, pull up loop through next two STS, you will have two loops on your hook – your original loop before you began the stitch and the last loop of this TR. Ignore these two stitches and continue with above instructions over the next five stitches. At the end of all 6 partial TR, YO, and pull loop through all stitches on the hook.

You will make seven granny squares in the round first. Then construct the bag to finish.

Special Instructions for Pattern
- Read through the pattern before beginning.
- While you can choose any purse handles, just make sure it has at least a 5” opening so your granny square fits comfortably through it.
- Don’t worry too much about our gauge as long as your squares match each other.

Granny Square (make 7)
With CA CH 8, join RND with SL ST in first CH.
RND 1: CH 7 (counts as 1 TR and CH 3). TR 6 times into ring, [CH 3, TR 6 times into ring] 2 times, CH 3, TR 5 times into ring, join RND with SL ST in 4th CH of original 7 CH. See picture below for how this should look.
RND 2: SL ST in next 2 CH, [CH 5, TR6TOG over next 6 TR, CH 5, SL ST in 2nd of CH 3] 4 times, join with SL ST in place of 2nd SL ST at beginning of RND. Fasten off CA.
RND 3: Join CB with a SL ST at the top of your TR6TOG space to the left of where you fastened off CA. See picture for example. All in the next CH 3 space of RND 1 [TR 3 times, CH 1, TR 3 times, CH 2, TR 3 times, CH 1, TR 3 times, 1 SL ST in top of next TR6TOG] 4 times. Last SL ST will be worked where you joined the yarn. Join CA and fasten off CB.
RND 4: CH 4 (counts as a TR), TR 5 times in same stitch you joined your yarn in, *skip (3 TR, CH 1, 3 TR), (TR 6 times, CH 2, TR 6 times) all in CH 2 space at corner, skip (3 TR, CH 1, 3 TR), TR 6 times in next SL ST, repeat from * twice more, then skip
(3 TR, CH 1, 3 TR), then (TR 6 times, CH 2, TR 6 times) all in CH 2 space in corner, skip (3 TR, CH 1, 3 TR), finish with 1 SL
ST in top of CH 4 at beginning of RND. Join CC and fasten off CA.
RND 5: CH 1, SC in each of next 6 TR, *DC in CH 1 space of RND 3 below, SC in each of next 6 TR, SC 3 times in CH 2 space at corner, SC in each of next 6 TR, DC in CH 1 space of RND 3 below, SC in each of next 6 TR repeat from * twice more. Then
DC in CH 1 space of RND 3 below, SC in each of next 6 TR, SC 3 times in CH 2 space at corner, SC in each of next 6 TR, DC in CH 1 space of RND 3 below, SL ST to join RND.
RND 6: CH 3 (counts as DC), *DC in each ST to center SC of 3 at corner, TR in this stitch, repeat from * three more times, DC in each of last 7 SC, DC in last DC, SL ST in top of CH 3 at beginning of RND. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Joining
Follow the picture above for layout of bag. You will use any joining method you like along the tops of your DCs to secure all the squares together. Be sure to leave the top open (see picture, do not sew where black lines are).

Attaching the handle
Fold the top granny square inward and put top of square through the handle. Then sew it to the top of the first round in between 6 TRs as shown by the arrow in above picture. Repeat with other handle.
