Preparing The New Yarn For The Join

When beginning the new row, lay the new yarn over the top of the left needle to the left of the old yarn, with the tail to the right.

Tail Length

Ensure your tail at least six inches long for the securing step and weaving in.

Knit One Stitch

Knit the first stitch of the row with the new color.

Bring Both Strands Together

Now grab the tail of the new yarn and prepare to knit with both strands.

Knit the Next Stitch (Securing Stitch)

With both strands held together, knit your next stitch.

Drop The Extra Strand

Drop the tail strand and continue knitting like normal.

What To Do When You Come Back To The Stitches

When you reach the stitches on the wrong side of your work, you will knit (or whatever stitch you are doing) those two strands as one. Your new yarn is fully anchored and just needs to be woven in at the end of your project.

Final Result

The join is virtually invisible. Once tails are woven in, the fabric looks clean and uniform. This method creates a reliable, fuss-free join without knots or unraveling.

Notes for Different Stitch Patterns

Because the fabric will have a double bump where the stitches were worked together, this join may not work for every kind of stitch pattern. This join is great for stockinette and garter, but if working in a more complex stitch pattern, test the join first to see how it looks.

Now you know how to securely join your new yarn. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
