Little Hoot Owl Bowl
Meet your new favorite stash-buster: the Little Hoot Owl Bowl. This irresistibly cute little owl is full of personality, with big curious eyes and cozy texture that make it just as fun to display as it is to make. Even better, it’s designed to use up those small bits of leftover worsted weight yarn you already have on hand, so you can turn scraps into something truly charming and useful. It works up quickly and adds a playful touch to any space, making it perfect for gifting or keeping all to yourself.
You’ll find everything you need to crochet the project below, including the yarn, crochet hook, a free pattern, and a video tutorial. If you like this pattern, please share it!

Crochet Tutorials
If you’re new to crochet, no worries! I have many beginner tutorial videos to guide you through every step of the process. My tutorials are designed to be easy to follow and will help you master the basics and beyond. You can use the search bar anytime to look for a particular stitch or technique.

Crochet Stitches Used For The Bowl
For the arm pattern, you will be using single, half double, double and treble crochet, as well as decreasing and increasing. If you are new to these stitches, click on them to be taken to a beginner tutorial that will walk you through step-by-step before you start the project.
Suggested Yarn

The bowl is made with leftover Red Heart Super Saver from my Canyon Blanket Pattern. This is a great scrap project as you only need 30 yards of Aran (0313) CA and 55 yards of Cafe Latte (0360) CB.
You will be using two strands of the yarn for the bowl portion and one strand for the eye portion.
However, get creative with color combos or use other worsted weight you have on hand. I’ve included some other great worsted weighy options below at various price points.
Other Yarn Options in Worsted Weight
$

Brava Worsted by Knit Picks/We Crochet is a 100% premium acrylic yarn known for its softness, durability, and affordability. This comes in tons of shades so you can create a truly unique project.
$$

Vanna’s Choice yarn is also another great choice for the bowl as it comes in tons of colors and is relatively affordable.
$$$

Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool is a classic, 100% natural wool yarn known for its durability. This would make a super rustic looking owl that would stand the test of time.
Crochet Hook Used For Pattern
For the project, you will need a 5 mm [US-H] crochet hook. This smaller hook combined with two strands of yarn will create a dense structured bowl that can stand on its own when empty.
After testing numerous brands of crochet hooks, I’ve narrowed down my favorites. Below, you’ll find my top picks, ranked from least to most expensive.
$

Clover Soft Touch Amour crochet hooks are my absolute favorite! Their comfy, soft handles make long crochet sessions a breeze.
$$

For just slightly more money, Etimo Tulip Crochet hooks are another winner in my book. With their cushioned, ergonomic handles and smooth hooks, they make crocheting with any kind of yarn super easy.
$$$

For those of you who like to splurge, Furls Crochet hooks are beautiful hooks made from resin, wood, and metal. Their ergonomic design and polished surfaces make each stitch smooth and effortless. Treat yourself to these elegant hooks for a truly premium crochet experience.
Additional Supplies Needed
The pattern is worked in spirals so you will need a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds. I love the split ring ones below as they come in various sizes (and you’ll need a big one for this project) and the open end is fast to put on and take off as you come to each round.

You will need either 3/4″ safety eyes or two buttons. I used safety eyes for the solid look and easy attaching.

The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.

Gauge For Pattern
To achieve the same size as listed below, you will need the following gauge:
4”= 13 STS x 14 rows in pattern
If you are not worried about having the exact same size, you don’t have to check gauge.
Finished Measurements
- 11″ Circumference (around) x 3″ high

Special Stitches Used in Pattern
Tall CH: This will be used instead of a beginning CH 3. You will pull up a loop as tall as a DC, then lock it in with another CH. Your first DC will be worked in the first ST of the RND. The tall CH does not count as a stitch. This will eliminate the gap at the beginning of the RND. See the video tutorial for help.

Construction
The bowl is worked in spirals from the bottom up. Then the eyes are worked separately and sewn on at the end.
Abbreviations Used
- CA(B): color A(B)
- CH: chain
- DC: double crochet
- HDC: half double crochet
- RND: round
- SC: single crochet
- SC2TOG: single crochet 2 together
- SL ST: slip stitch
- ST(S): stitch(es)
- TR: treble stitch
- […]: work stitches contained within the backets the amount of times stated directly outside of the brackets.

- The eyes are worked with one strand.
- You can use either safety eyes or buttons for the center of the eyes.
- The bowl is worked in spirals with no joining of RNDs, use a stitch marker to keep track.
