Knit and Crochet Ever After

Canyon Blanket

Wrap yourself in cozy, canyon-deep comfort with the Canyon Blanket Crochet Pattern—a lofty, double-weave blanet created with a unique waffle stitch. This stitch gives the blanket its signature plush, thermal texture, making it unbelievably warm for cold-weather snuggling. Yes, it’s a yarn-lover’s dream that uses plenty of yarn—but that just means extra squish, extra drape, and extra luxurious weight in every size. And with five sizes to choose from—from an everyday Throw blanket all the way up to a King—you can make this blanket fit any space. The gentle three-color ombré transition is fully customizable, so you can tailor the palette to match your home or bedroom perfectly.

You’ll find everything you need to crochet the blanket below, including the yarn, crochet hooks, a free pattern, and a video tutorial that includes how to change sizes. If you like this pattern, please share it!

Crochet Tutorials

If you’re new to crochet, no worries! I have many beginner tutorial videos to guide you through every step of the process. My tutorials are designed to be easy to follow and will help you master the basics and beyond. You can use the search bar anytime to look for a particular stitch or technique.

Crochet Stitch Used For The Blanket

The main stitch used throughout the blanket is a modified single crochet that creates the waffle weave stitch. This will be explained in greater detail below and of course you can watch the video for help with this stitch. If you are new to crochet, I have slower video tutorials available that will walk you through working a single crochet that you can watch before you start this project.

Yarn Selection

The waffle weave stitch is a stash buster for sure. Because of its double weave, you will go through a lot of yarn so I chose to go economical with my choice.

Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo is a classic, all-purpose worsted weight acrylic yarn known for its durability and wide range of colors. Each jumbo skein offers a generous amount of yardage, making it ideal for large projects like blankets, home décor, and sweaters. It’s machine washable and designed to hold up well over time, even with frequent use. While it’s not the softest yarn out of the skein, it often softens with washing and is a reliable choice for budget-friendly crafting.

Depending on the size you want to make, you will need three colors of a worsted weight yarn if substituting:

  • Throw: 50″ x 60″
    • 1200 yards each of CA, CB, CC
  • Twin: 65″ x 90″
    • 2350 yards each of CA, CB, CC
  • Full: 85″ x 90″
    • 3070 yards each of CA, CB, CC
  • Queen: 90″ x 100″
    • 3650 yards each of CA, CB, CC
  • King: 108″ x 100″
    • 4350 yards each of CA, CB, CC

Other Large Skein Options

Lion Brand Pound of Love yarn is a soft, medium-weight acrylic yarn known for its excellent value and baby-friendly feel. With over 1,000 yards per skein, it’s perfect for large projects like baby blankets, garments, and accessories. The yarn is machine washable and comes in a gentle palette of pastel and classic shades, making it especially popular for baby items and heirloom-quality gifts.

Caron One Pound yarn is a versatile and budget-friendly acrylic yarn popular among knitters and crocheters for its generous yardage and durability. Each skein offers over 800 yards of medium (worsted) weight yarn, making it ideal for large projects like blankets, sweaters, and home décor. It’s machine washable and available in a wide range of solid colors, making it a go-to choice for both beginners and experienced crafters who want quality and value in one package.

Crochet Hooks Used For Pattern

You’ll need both a 15mm and a 12mm crochet hook for this project. The 15 mm will be used to work the body of the blanket, while the 12mm while be used for the border stitches.

Your options are somewhat limited when you get to larger crochet hooks, but after testing different kinds, I’ve got my two favorite below at different price points.

$$

Pyrm is my favorite plastic crochet hook brand. Yarn glides smoothly and the shaft is the whole body so you don’t run out of room when working with multiple strands. I also love how pointy the inline head is so it is easy to get through stitches.

$$$

For those of you who like to splurge, Furls Crochet hooks have beautiful resin hooks that are super lightweight and work wonderfully. They have tons of different styles for large crochet hooks so you can pick your favorite colors or mix and match.

Additional Supplies Needed

The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.

Gauge For Pattern

To achieve the same sizes as listed below, you will need the following gauge: 4”= 6 STS x 9.5 rows in pattern.

Finished Measurements

  • Throw: 50″ x 60″
  • Twin: 65″ x 90″
  • Full: 85″ x 90″
  • Queen: 90″ x 100″
  • King: 108″ x 100″
