Yarn Selection

Yarn Used

For the basket pictured I used Lion Brand Thick & Quick in Fisherman (099). This versatile, go-to jumbo yarn works up incredibly fast and creates a nice dense basket. Plus, the affordable price and wide range of vibrant colors make it easy to make baskets for every room of your house!

Just in case you want more options, see some other good substitutes below ranked from least to most expensive. If substituting, you will need approx. 200 yards of the super bulky yarn. Choose a structured yarn to help your basket maintain its shape. Wool, dense acrylic or a blend of both are your best bets.

Lion Brand Hometown Yarn is a super bulky weight, that is an excellent choice for home decor projects. Lion Brand Hometown Yarn ensures that your projects work up quickly and last with its acrylic content. It has a diverse color palette to choose from, so you can customize your project to your taste.

Bernat Forever Fleece is a super bulky, brushed polyester yarn that gives it a fleece like texture. Each 280g skein provides 194 yards of yarn, making it perfect for this basket. It’s machine washable and dryable, offering practicality alongside comfort. Available in a wide array of solid and semi-solid colors—from soft neutrals to vibrant hues—Forever Fleece is perfect to make projects for every room of your home.

Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok North is a super bulky, single-ply yarn crafted from 100% Fine Highland Wool. Its squishy and sturdy texture makes it ideal for quick-knit projects. Available in a palette of twelve rich, softly heathered colors, Woolstok North brings both warmth and vibrant hues to your knitting projects.

Knitting Needles Used For Pattern

You’ll need US 8 [5mm] 24″ circulars (or DPNs if you prefer) for this pattern. The basket is worked with much smaller needles than called for on the ball band. This creates a dense stitch that keeps the basket from stretching too much when filled.

In the video, I used my Knitter’s Pride Cubics Interchangable Needles which I normally love to use. I did have some thoughts on using these at the end of the video that I recommend you checking out just in case you have these and are thinking of using them for such a dense project (spoiler alert – they were not pleasant to use for this project).

Instead I would recommend a rounded needle. After testing numerous brands of knitting needles, I’ve narrowed down my favorites. Below, you’ll find my top picks, ranked from least to most expensive.

$

ChiaoGoo Fixed Circular Knitting Needles are renowned for their high-quality stainless steel construction, offering a smooth, lightweight, and durable knitting experience. The precision-crafted tips provide excellent stitch control, making them ideal for intricate patterns and lacework. Featuring a flexible, memory-free red nylon-coated steel cable, these needles prevent kinks and tangles, ensuring a frustration-free knitting process.

$$

Addi Turbo Circular Needles are beloved for their smooth, fast knitting experience, featuring lightweight brass tips coated with nickel for a slick, low-friction surface. Designed for speed and efficiency, these needles allow stitches to glide effortlessly, making them perfect for everything from simple stockinette to complex lacework. The pliable, kink-resistant blue cord ensures smooth transitions between needle and cable, reducing hand strain and tangling.

$$$

Lantern Moon Interchangeable Knitting Needles in Ebony are a luxurious choice for knitters who love the warmth and smooth glide of wood. Made from sustainably sourced ebony, these needles have a rich, dark finish and a polished surface that allows stitches to flow effortlessly while maintaining just the right amount of grip. The finely crafted tapered tips provide excellent precision, making them ideal for a variety of projects.

Additional Supplies Needed

You’ll need five stitch markers, with four of them being contrasting. That is so when you get to your decreasing, the one opposite stitch marker can easily mark the beginning end of your round.

I love how cute ChiaoGoo Stitch Markers are but they are also great stitch markers. They slide easily and come in many sizes in one package so you have one for every project you can think of. You can use two different colors from this pack for the project.

The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.
