Crochet Tutorials

If you’re new to crochet, no worries! I have many beginner tutorial videos to guide you through every step of the process. My tutorials are designed to be easy to follow and will help you master the basics and beyond. You can use the search bar anytime to look for a particular stitch or technique.

Crochet Stitch Used In Pattern

This pattern exclusively uses just chains and double crochet stitches, making it perfect for beginners. Even if you’re new to crochet, you can easily create this beautiful shawl. And if you ever need a bit of guidance, I have slower video tutorials available that will walk you through each double crochet stitch used in the pattern.

Yarn Selection

For the shawl pictured, I used Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball yarn, which is a cute self-striping yarn for knitters and crocheters. This yarn is known for its unique construction, blending a lightweight cotton-acrylic mix with a touch of metallic shimmer. Each skein transitions through a beautiful array of colors, creating an effortlessly beautiful gradient effect. Perfect for shawls, wraps, and accessories, it provides both warmth and breathability, making it suitable for year-round wear. You will need approx. 475 yards to complete the project.

Other Yarn Options

Here are a couple of other great options for the shawl ranked from most affordable to most luxurious.

$

Lion Brand Landscapes yarn is known for its stunning colorways and soft texture, making it a favorite among crafters. This self-striping yarn effortlessly creates beautiful, vibrant patterns, adding depth and dimension to any project.

$$

Knit Picks Chroma Worsted yarn is one of my favorites. This yarn has long color runs that are perfect for crochet. Made from a blend of superwash wool and nylon, it offers both warmth and durability.

$$$

Berroco Bozzolo yarn is made from 100% cotton, offering a soft and supple texture with a slight sheen. Its chainette construction adds extra durability and a light, airy feel to your projects. Ideal for spring and summer projects, it provides breathability and comfort, ensuring your creations are both stylish and suitable for warmer weather.

Yarn Used In The Video

If you haven’t seen my recent Temu Haul Video, I picked up some yarn that I thought was cute and wanted to try it to see how I liked it. If you want to see my unbiased opinion and if this yarn is good for everyone (spoiler: it is not), you can check out that review here. If you love the look of this yarn though, you can pick up some from Temu and use the code: afl48407 to get an extra 30% off if you are a new shopper.

Crochet Hook Used For The Pattern

You will need a size 6mm or US-J crochet hook to make this shawl. See below for my favorites ranked from least expensive to most.

$

Clover Soft Touch Amour crochet hooks are my absolute favorite! Their comfy, soft handles make long crochet sessions a breeze.

$$

For just slightly more money, Etimo Tulip Crochet hooks are another winner in my book. With their cushioned, ergonomic handles and smooth hooks, they make crocheting with any kind of yarn super easy.

$$$

For those of you who like to splurge, Furls Crochet hooks are beautiful hooks made from resin, wood, and metal. Their ergonomic design and polished surfaces make each stitch smooth and effortless. Treat yourself to these elegant hooks for a truly premium crochet experience.

Additional Supplies Needed

The only other item you will need to finish this project is a yarn or tapestry needle. I’m partial to the Susan Bates Metal Yarn Needles like the ones shown below.

Gauge For Pattern

To achieve the same size as listed below, you will need the following gauge: 4”= 14 DCs and 6 rows in
pattern. However, for this project, achieving an exact gauge is not crucial, so feel free to crochet at your own comfortable tension.

Video Tutorial

The video tutorial will walk you through the first seven rows of the shawl, including the four-row repeat.

Pin For Later

Save this page for later if you’re not quite ready to start the project yet.

Finished Measurements

If following gauge you can expect the shawl to measure approx. 24” across at widest point x 76” long. But, again, gauge is not super important for this project, so don’t get too caught up on matching gauge.

Construction

The shawl is worked from the small end of the triangle and gets wider as you go with easy increases and decreases that produce the fun bias shape.

Special Stitches

You will need to perform the following special stitches in this pattern. I’ve linked to my super fast stitch refresher videos in case you need the extra help:

  • DC2TOG (double crochet 2 together): Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops on hook), yarn over and pull through the first two loops (two loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (four loops on hook), yarn over and pull through the first two loops (three loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.
  • DC Inc (double crochet 2 times in next stitch): Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops on hook), yarn over and pull through the first two loops (two loops on hook), yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops, yarn over again, insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops on hook), yarn over and pull through the first two loops (two loops on hook), yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops.
  • Tall CH (tall chain): A tall chain is a substitute for the usual chain 3 at the beginning of a double crochet row. Instead of chaining 3, you create a longer chain, which can give a more even edge and reduce the gap often seen with a regular chain 3. You will make a chain the height of a double crochet and then lock it in with another chain. Your first double crochet will be made in the same stitch as the tall chain.

Special Instructions for Pattern

  • Read through the pattern before beginning.
  • You may substitute a CH 3 in place of a Tall CH if you prefer, do not work a DC into the 1st stitch if you do.
  • Each CH 2 equals 1 ST in the ST count. The lace is made with a CH 2 instead of a CH 1 so the hole is bigger, but when worked into there is only 1 DC made on the next row.
