Crochet Tutorials

If you’re new to crochet, no worries! I have many beginner tutorial videos to guide you through every step of the process. My tutorials are designed to be easy to follow and will help you master the basics and beyond. You can use the search bar anytime to look for a particular stitch or technique.

Crochet Stitches Used For The Basket

The stitch used throughout the basket is just simple single crochet. If you are new to crochet, I have slower video tutorials available that will walk you through working the basic single crochet used in this pattern that you can watch before you start this project. Then watch the video tutorial below to learn how to make the basket.

Yarn Selection

I used two different brands of yarn for each of the pictured baskets. Keep scrolling for the specific colors used.

For the monochromatic basket, I used good old Super Saver. Red Heart Super Saver is a classic, all-purpose worsted-weight acrylic yarn known for its durability and wide range of colors. It’s machine washable and designed to hold up well over time, even with frequent use.

For the colorful basket, I used Vanna’s Choice yarn. It is a beloved and versatile yarn. Created in collaboration with the renowned television personality and avid crocheter, Vanna White, this yarn is celebrated for its exceptional quality and wide array of vibrant colors. Crafted from a blend of acrylic fibers, Vanna’s Choice offers a soft and easy-to-work-with texture. Its durability and machine-washable nature ensure that your handmade creations will stand the test of time.

Other Yarn Options

If you’d like to substitute another yarn for the basket, you’ll need about 275 yards of CA, 150 yards of CB and 120 yards of CC in a worsted-weight yarn.

Below are some other options that are a great substitute for the pattern yarn, at multiple price points.

$

Brava Worsted by Knit Picks/We Crochet is a 100% premium acrylic yarn known for its softness, durability, and affordability. Available in over 50 solid colors, as well as striped, speckled, and tweed variations, it offers a wide range of options for various projects . The yarn is machine washable and tumble dryable, ensuring easy care for everyday use .

$$

Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool is a classic, 100% natural wool yarn known for its durability and warmth. This worsted-weight yarn is lightly processed, retaining its lanolin for added water resistance, making it ideal for sturdy, long-lasting projects. With its firm structure and worsted weight, Fisherman’s Wool is a great choice for making a neutral colored basket.

$$$

Knit Picks High Desert Worsted is a premium 100% American-grown wool yarn made from a luxurious blend of Merino and Merino-Rambouillet fibers. With a tight twist that delivers excellent stitch definition. The yarn comes in a beautiful palette of jewel-toned solids and rustic heathers, inspired by the high desert landscape.

Crochet Hook Used For Pattern

You’ll need a 6mm [US-J] crochet hook for this project. The hook called for in the pattern is
intentionally smaller than would be normally used. This creates tight stitches to give structure to the basket.

After testing numerous brands of crochet hooks, I’ve narrowed down my favorites. Below, you’ll find my top picks, ranked from least to most expensive.

$

Clover Soft Touch Amour crochet hooks are my absolute favorite! Their comfy, soft handles make long crochet sessions a breeze.

$$

For just slightly more money, Etimo Tulip Crochet hooks are another winner in my book. With their cushioned, ergonomic handles and smooth hooks, they make crocheting with any kind of yarn super easy.

$$$

For those of you who like to splurge, Furls Crochet hooks are beautiful hooks made from resin, wood, and metal. Their ergonomic design and polished surfaces make each stitch smooth and effortless. Treat yourself to these elegant hooks for a truly premium crochet experience.

Additional Supplies Needed

You will of course need a yarn needle to weave in your ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.

The basket is worked in spirals and not joined, so you will need a stitch marker to keep track of rounds.

I love the split ring ones below as they come in various sizes and are easy to take in and out of your project.

Gauge For Pattern

To achieve the same size as listed below, you will need the following gauge: 4”= 12 SCs and 12 rows in pattern. For this project, achieving an exact gauge isn’t critical, so don’t worry too much about it unless you want the exact same size basket. Just keep your stitches tight to have a sturdy basket that stands up when not filled.

Special Instructions For The Pattern

  • Read through the pattern before beginning.
  • All parts of the pattern will be worked with three strands of yarn held together.
  • Before beginning, wind each skein into two center-pull balls. I have a video tutorial on how to do this here.
  • The hook called for in the pattern is intentionally smaller than would be normally used. This creates tight stitches to give structure to the basket. If you would like a floppy basket or find it too difficult to crochet with this hook, you may go up to a size you feel comfortable with. Just know that your basket will be slightly larger and less stiff.
  • When a new round calls for a change in one of the strands of color, you will make it during the last stitch of the previous round. For example, RND 18 says to use 2 strands of CA and 1 strand of CB. During the last stitch of RND 17, with 3 strands of CA you will insert your hook in the last stitch, YO, pull up a loop. Then drop and fasten off one strand of CA and add one strand of CB, YO, and pull through the remaining loops on the hook. Now you have the correct colors for the next round.
