Crochet Stitch Used For The Pattern
The stitch used for the basket is basic single crochet. If you are new to crochet I have slower video tutorials available that will walk you through working single crochet in the round, increasing, decreasing and everything else used in this pattern that you can watch before you start this project.
Yarn Selection
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick is a super bulky weight yarn that combines the warmth of wool with the easy care of acrylic. Its soft texture, excellent stitch definition, and wide range of colors make it a favorite for quick projects.
Other Yarn Options
When substituting yarn for the pattern you will need approx. 105 yards of a super bulky weight yarn. I have listed a few of my other favorites that would work great for this project below.

Crochet Hook Used For Pattern
You’ll need a 5.5mm [US-I] crochet hook for the pattern. This is a much smaller hook than called for on the ball band. The reason is to keep the stitches tight so your bowl will stand up on it’s own once constructed.
After testing numerous brands, I’ve narrowed down my favorites. Below, you’ll find my top picks, ranked from least to most expensive.

Additional Supplies Needed
The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in ends and sew the owl eyes and nose to the basket. Be sure to choose a large eye to accommodate the four strands of yarn. I like metal needles like the Susan Bates option below.
Gauge For Pattern
To achieve the same size as listed below, you will need the following gauge: 2”= 8 SCs and 8 rows in
pattern. For this project, achieving an exact gauge isn’t critical, but keeping your stitches tight is essential to ensure your bowl holds its shape.

Organizer complete is approx. 5” tall.

The motifs are worked in the round individually. Then they are whipstitched together to form the bowl.

Special Instructions For The Pattern
- Read through the whole pattern before beginning.
- The tight stitches are what will make your organizer stand up on its own. Using the smallest hook possible with your yarn will make the tightest stitches to ensure a stiff basket.
- Weave in tails as you go.
- Follow the photo or video tutorial to sew the organizer together. The video tutorial will show you how to make a more rounded bowl and the photo tutorial will show you how to make a more angular bowl.
Pentagon Instructions (make 11)
RND 1: SC 10 times into a magic adjustable loop. Join RND with SL ST in 1st SC. 10 STS
RND 2: CH 1, SC in same ST as CH 1, SC 3 times in next ST, [SC in next ST, SC 3 times in next ST] 4 times. Join RND with SL ST in 1st SC. 20 STS
RND 3: CH 1, SC in same ST as CH 1, SC in next ST, SC 3 times in next ST, [SC in next 3 STS, SC 3 times in next ST] 4 times, SC in next ST. Join RND with SL ST in 1st SC. 30 STS
RND 4: CH 1, SC in same ST as CH 1, SC in next 2 STS, SC 3 times in next ST, [SC in next 5 STS, SC 3 times in next ST] 4 times, SC in next 2 STS. Join RND with SL ST in 1st SC. 40 STS
Fasten off and weave in ends of each pentagon as you finish them.
Organizer Construction
- All pieces will be sewed with wrong sides facing together.
- The whipstitching will be visible from the outside. This is done on purpose to get the faceted edges.
- If you want a rounded organizer, hold the right sides together when sewing and the stitches will be to the inside and the edges will be rounded off.
- Sew through both of the top loops of each side when joining.
- Perform two whipstitches per stitch on every stitch around. This gives a nice thick uniform edge throughout.
With a length of the project yarn and wrong sides held together, begin construction by whipstitching 5 pentagons along the edges of 1 pentagon. The black lines above show where they are being joined.
Picture shows how the wrong sides face each other as you whipstitch. At each corner, perform 2 whipstitch stitches on each of the pentagons that are being joined throughout.
Next, fold up the 5 pentagons (2 at a time) with the wrong sides together and whipstitch together. The black line shows where you will be joining.

Next, working around the entire top edge, join the next 5 pentagons. The black lines show the next join. Remember to put wrong sides together when joining.

Lastly, join the edges of the last 5 pentagons where the black line is shown above.
