Pip the Chick Egg Amigurumi

This workshop will give you step-by-step instructions to make this cute little chick popping out of his Easter egg. It is broken into four parts found in order below so even a beginner can make. You can also omit the beak and legs and make a bunch of fun Easter egg decor. These are “egg sized” so you can make as many as you want and even use them in place of real eggs for hunts.

The left hand video tutorials can be found for the pattern at the very bottom of this page.

You’ll find everything you need to crochet the egg below, including the yarn, crochet hook, a free pattern, and a video tutorial. If you like this pattern, please share it!

Crochet Tutorials

If you’re new to crochet, no worries! I have many beginner tutorial videos to guide you through every step of the process. My tutorials are designed to be easy to follow and will help you master the basics and beyond. You can use the search bar anytime to look for a particular stitch or technique.

Crochet Stitches Used For The Egg

For the egg, we will be using the single crochet stitch throughout. I have beginner tutorials on this stitch if you need a slower start. Click on the stitch to be taken to those.

Suggested Yarn

For Pip, I used Dishie yarn. The Knit Picks/We Crochet Dishie Yarn is a 100% worsted-weight cotton yarn with a tight spin and a range of colors, including variegated for making “dyed” Easter eggs. I used colors Clementine (25403) CA for the beak and legs and Tricycle Multi (25851) CB for the egg portion.

Other Yarn Options

If you’d like to substitute another yarn for the egg, look for any yarn in worsted weight, you will need approximately 10 yards of CA and 50 yards of CB for the same size egg noted below.

Below are some other options that are a great substitute for the Dishie, at multiple price points.

$

Brava Worsted by Knit Picks/We Crochet is a 100% premium acrylic yarn known for its softness, durability, and affordability. Available in over 50 solid colors, as well as striped, speckled, and tweed variations, it offers a wide range of options for various projects.

$$

Lily’s Sugar and Cream Cotton Yarn is perfect for a wide range of crafting projects. Made from 100% natural cotton fibers, it offers softness, durability, and easy care, making it ideal for creating everything from dishcloths and washcloths to home decor items and accessories. With a vibrant array of colors to choose from, including solids, stripes, and ombres, Lily’s Sugar and Cream Cotton Yarn adds a pop of color and texture to any project.

For the “egg only” pictures. I used leftover Malabrigo Worsted Merino Yarn in apple green and orchid. This is more pricey, but because it takes so little to make each egg, I was able to use up some scraps I had leftover from other projects and make eggs for decor that will last for years to come. Plus I love how the dying of the yarn makes it look like the Easter eggs were actually dyed.

Crochet Hook Used For Pattern

You’ll need a 4mm [US-F/G] crochet hook for this project. I note F/G as depending on the manufacturer, the letter size can be different. In this case, look for the 4mm rather than the letter.

After testing numerous brands of crochet hooks, I’ve narrowed down my favorites. Below, you’ll find my top picks, ranked from least to most expensive.

$

Clover Soft Touch Amour crochet hooks are my absolute favorite! Their comfy, soft handles make long crochet sessions a breeze.

$$

For just slightly more money, Etimo Tulip Crochet hooks are another winner in my book. With their cushioned, ergonomic handles and smooth hooks, they make crocheting with any kind of yarn super easy.

$$$

For those of you who like to splurge, Furls Crochet hooks are beautiful hooks made from resin, wood, and metal. Their ergonomic design and polished surfaces make each stitch smooth and effortless. Treat yourself to these elegant hooks for a truly premium crochet experience.

Additional Supplies Needed

You will also need some polyfill. Polyfill is a lightweight, fluffy stuffing material commonly used for pillows, amigurumi, and home décor projects. You will need just a little bit to stuff each egg you make.

The pattern is worked in spirals so you will need a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds. I love the split ring ones below as they come in various sizes (and you’ll need a smaller one for this project) and the open end is fast to put on and take off as you come to each round.

While this is not necessary, this stuffing tool makes putting polyfill in small amigurumis so much easier than any other tool I’ve used.

The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.

Gauge For Pattern

To achieve the same size as listed below, you will need the following gauge: 4″ = 20 STS and 10 rows in pattern. However, with this being an amigurmi, gauge is not terribly important unless you want to make the exact same size egg as noted below.

Finished Measurements

The finished egg, when following gauge, is appropriately egg sized at 2″ wide x 2 3/4″ high.

Special Stitches Used in Pattern

SC2TOG (single crochet 2 together): With loop on your hook, yo, insert your hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop, insert your hook into the next stitch after and pull up another loop, yo, pull through all three loops on your hook. See a video tutorial on this stitch here.

Magic Adjustable Loop: To make a magic adjustable loop, start by laying the yarn across your palm with the tail end hanging down and the working yarn attached to the ball resting over your fingers. Wrap the working yarn around two fingers to form a loop, crossing over the tail to create an “X” shape. Insert your hook under the first strand and over the second strand of the loop, then pull the second strand through to create a loop on your hook. Chain one to secure the loop, then work the required number of stitches into the center of the loop, crocheting over both strands. Once all stitches are complete, gently pull the yarn tail to tighten the loop closed, adjusting until the center is fully closed. Continue working the next round as directed, and weave in the tail later to secure the loop. See a video tutorial on this stitch here.

Construction

The beak and legs are worked first and then attached as the egg is made in the round.

I love Pip the Chick! Have made about ten of them, with 6 going to my nephew’s children. Will probably end up with at least twice that many as they are so cute and fun to make, and will donate them. I did add another row of sc2tog 4 times.

Thanks for making and sharing the pattern.
