I Bought Some AI Looking Knit & Crochet Books from Temu — Are the Patterns AI Too?

I have been seeing some seriously questionable knit and crochet books popping up on Temu, and the first thing that caught my attention was the covers.

They looked obviously AI-generated.

The finished pictures didn’t even look like knit or crochet, models had extra fingers and some were just weird! But that got me wondering: if the covers are AI, what about the actual patterns inside the books?

So, naturally, I bought them.

Are These Actually Knit & Crochet Books?

The books are marketed as knit and crochet pattern books, but the listings only showed the covers. No finished projects, no clue of what the book contained, just an AI generated cover and the promise of what may be inside. And these books were not cheap. They were all around $17-$22 each!

We’ve all seen the rise of AI slop. Content that is quickly generated by AI with little concern for whether it is accurate, useful, or even possible to make. And knitting and crochet seem particularly vulnerable to this. AI can create an image of a beautiful sweater, blanket, bag, or amigurumi without actually understanding how that item would need to be constructed. A picture can look convincing while the pattern behind it could be completely unusable. You’ve seen me purchase AI looking kits and end up with horrible results, now it’s time to try just patterns.
