Knit and Crochet Ever After

Agate Scarf

The Agate Knit Scarf is my go-to for instant cozy. This super bulky beauty knits up fast into the softest, squishiest fabric and has that oversized look that makes any cold day better. The entire pattern is just a two row repeat, so you can get into a relaxing rhythm and watch it grow without staring at the instructions, which makes it perfect for couch knitting, gift making, or a quick treat for yourself.

You’ll find everything you need to knit the scarf below, including the yarn, knitting needles, and a free pattern. If you like this pattern, please share it!

Knit Tutorials

If you’re new to knitting, no worries! I have many beginner tutorial videos to guide you through every step of the process. My tutorials are designed to be easy to follow and will help you master the basics and beyond. You can use the search bar anytime to look for a particular stitch or technique.

Yarn Selection

The pattern uses approx. 295 yards of super bulky yarn for the scarf. For the scarf pictured, I used Caron Chunky Cakes in Trifle (17022) which has a beautiful gradient and heathered look. All of their colors in this line are super cute like the one below.

If you would like to substitute or don’t have Chunky Cakes available near you, I have some other options listed below in various price points.

$

Lion Brand Hometown Yarn is a super bulky weight, that will speed up your knit and crochet projects, allowing your creations to come to life with remarkable swiftness. Whether you’re crafting cozy blankets, trendy scarves, or stylish accessories, Lion Brand Hometown Yarn ensures that your projects work up quickly and last with its acrylic content. It has a diverse color palette to choose from, so you can customize your project to your taste.

If you’re looking for the perfect super bulky yarn for quick crochet and knitting projects, look no further than Lion Brand Thick & Quick! This versatile, go-to jumbo yarn works up incredibly fast on big needles or hooks. With a soft, wool-like feel and amazing stitch definition, it’s an ideal choice for cozy accessories, warm blankets, and more.

$$$

Malabrigo Caracol yarn is a luxuriously soft and uniquely textured bulky yarn that brings a dreamy, artistic flair to any project. Hand-dyed in Malabrigo’s signature rich colorways, this single-ply merino wool is wrapped with a fine black or white thread, creating a stunning, almost hand-spun look. If you love bold textures and vibrant hues, this yarn is a must-try for your next project.

Knitting Needles Used For Pattern

You can use straight or circular needles for this project in a size 8mm [US-11]. Some of my favorite needs are made by Chia Goo. Their Stainless Steel Needles help the yarn glide like butter and the cord is made from nylon which keeps it untangled.

I’ve included some other great needles that I love below at different price points.

This affordable bamboo knitting needle set from Amazon has every size you’ll need to tackle any project. The smooth, lightweight bamboo makes them comfortable to use and helps prevent stitches from slipping off your needles.

If you’re starting out, a bamboo needle set is a great cost-effective choice—but if you’re serious about knitting and ready to invest, the Addi Click Set – Short Lace is in a league of its own. With sharp lace tips, smooth joins, and flexible cords, these needles make even the most intricate projects faster, easier, and more enjoyable.

Additional Supplies Needed

The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.

Gauge For Pattern

Gauge is 4”= 15 sts and 13 rows in pattern to make the same size pictured. However, you don’t have to worry about gauge unless you want it the exact same size. Scarves are great projects for those of us (like me) who don’t enjoy having to make gauge before starting. Just be sure to note that your yardage requirements may change if you do not follow gauge.

The finished size of the scarf (when gauge is followed) is approx. 10” wide x 58″ long.

The scarf is worked flat throughout.

Special Stitches

KFB (knit front and back): Knit into the front of the stitch, but don’t slip it off. Then knit into the back of the same stitch before slipping it off.

K2tog (knit 2 together): Insert your right needle knitwise into the first two stitches on the left needle simultaneously, wrap the yarn, and pull through as if knitting one stitch, then drop both stitches off the left needle.

K2tog tbl (knit 2 together through the back loop): Insert the right needle through the back loops of the first two stitches on the left needle fromright to left, wrap the yarn, and pull through.
