Yarn Selection
For the pictured beanie I used Lion Brand Scarfie in Mint/Silver (217). You will need approx. 180 yards for the adult size beanie and 160 yards for the child’s size beanie.

Lion Brand Scarfie Yarn is designed to add a touch of luxury to your projects, blending two contrasting colors in a single skein to create stunning gradient effects effortlessly. With a soft and snuggly feel, Scarfie Yarn is perfect for a warm beanie pattern. The unique color transitions make a beautiful transition, and the bulky weight makes the pattern work up super quickly.
If case you need some other options to choose from in the required bulky-weight yarn., see some great options below from least to most expensive.

Lion Brand Hue + Me is a chunky, wool-blend yarn designed in collaboration with Two of Wands. Made from 80% acrylic and 20% wool, it offers the perfect balance of warmth, durability, and easy care. This is a great choice for a muted neutral color beanie.

Berroco Dash is a soft and lofty bulky-weight yarn featuring a unique blend of 92% extrafine merino wool and 8% nylon. With its eye-catching dashes of color spun throughout a neutral base, this yarn creates stunning, painterly effects in projects without the need for complex colorwork. Dash is warm, lightweight, and perfect for cozy accessories.
Knitting Needles Used For Pattern
You’ll need US 10 [6mm] 16” circular needles (or DPNs if you prefer). You may need DPNs for decreasing on the crown depending on what you like to use.
After testing numerous brands of knitting needles, I’ve narrowed down my favorites. Below, you’ll find my top picks, ranked from least to most expensive.
$

ChiaoGoo Fixed Circular Knitting Needles are renowned for their high-quality stainless steel construction, offering a smooth, lightweight, and durable knitting experience. The precision-crafted tips provide excellent stitch control, making them ideal for intricate patterns and lacework. Featuring a flexible, memory-free red nylon-coated steel cable, these needles prevent kinks and tangles, ensuring a frustration-free knitting process.
$$

Addi Turbo Circular Needles are beloved for their smooth, fast knitting experience, featuring lightweight brass tips coated with nickel for a slick, low-friction surface. Designed for speed and efficiency, these needles allow stitches to glide effortlessly, making them perfect for everything from simple stockinette to complex lacework. The pliable, kink-resistant blue cord ensures smooth transitions between needle and cable, reducing hand strain and tangling.
$$$

Lantern Moon Interchangeable Knitting Needles in Ebony are a luxurious choice for knitters who love the warmth and smooth glide of wood. Made from sustainably sourced ebony, these needles have a rich, dark finish and a polished surface that allows stitches to flow effortlessly while maintaining just the right amount of grip. The finely crafted tapered tips provide excellent precision, making them ideal for a variety of projects.
Additional Supplies Needed
You will need a stitch marker to keep track of rounds.

I love how cute ChiaoGoo Stitch Markers are but they are also great stitch markers. They slide easily and come in many sizes in one package so you have one for every project you can think of.

You can also use a pom pom maker if you don’t like the old fashion way using cardboard. The Clover Pom Pom Maker is one of my favorite tools for creating perfectly fluffy pom poms every time—no more lopsided fluff balls! It’s super easy to use and great for adding that extra bit of charm to your hats, scarves, or gifts. Want to see it in action? Check out my tutorial here to learn exactly how to use it.
The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.

Gauge For Pattern
Gauge is super important for beanies or they will not fit correctly. To achieve the correct size, you will need the following gauge: 4”= 16 sts and 20 rows in pattern
Video Tutorial
The video tutorial will walk you through the pattern so all levels of knitters can make their own beanie.

Finished Measurements
The pattern can be in all sizes (I even made one for my cat as I’ll explain in the video), but the two sizes written in the pattern below are:
- Small(child): Approx. 16” around
- Large (adult): Approx. 20” around
- These sizes are an unstretched brim.
Construction
The beanie is worked in the round from the brim up. Starting with a foldable ribbed brim, you then move onto easy repeats and then finish with a fast and easy crown decrease.
Special Stitch Used In The Pattern
You will need to perform the following special stitch in this pattern:
- k2tog (knit 2 together)- hold your working yarn in back, and insert your right-hand needle knitwise into the first two stitches on your left-hand needle at the same time (from left to right). Wrap the yarn around the right needle just as you would for a regular knit stitch, then pull that loop through both stitches simultaneously. Finally, slide both of the original stitches off the left-hand needle—you’ve now turned two stitches into one. (one st has been decreased)
- k4b (knit 4 below) – (see video for visual instruction) begin by identifying the stitch located four rows directly below the stitch on your left-hand needle—this will be a vertical column of knit stitches (a knit “ladder”). Insert the tip of the right needle through the center of that stitch 4 rows below. Remove the next stitch from the left needle and unravel all sts above the 4th st creating 4 yarn “ladders”. With 4th st and 4 “ladders” on the right needle, wrap the yarn over the right needle and draw through all 5 loops to knit them together.
- Note some variations tell you to unravel your next stitch for four rows before making your knit stitch, but I find that too time-consuming and risky. Instead, just knit right into the fourth row and then unravel.
Abbreviations Used
- dpn- double-pointed needles.
- k- knit
- k2tog- knit 2 together
- k4b- knit 4 below
- p- purl
- Rnd- round
- st(s)- stitch(es)
- *…- pattern repeat, work the stitches after the asterisk across the body of the project when called for. The pattern will tell you when to stop the repeat.
