Knit and Crochet Ever After

Wobbly Rainbow Knit Cowl

The Wobbly Rainbow Cowl is the perfect project for a beginner. A simple two-row repeat with only four stitches makes up this cowl. The video tutorial below will also show you a super stretchy bind-off to ensure both side of your cowl are stretchy and comfy.

You’ll find everything you need to knit the scarf below, including the yarn, knitting needles, and a free pattern. If you like this pattern, please share it!

Knit Tutorials

If you’re new to knitting, no worries! I have many beginner tutorial videos to guide you through every step of the process. My tutorials are designed to be easy to follow and will help you master the basics and beyond. You can use the search bar anytime to look for a particular stitch or technique.

Yarn Selection

I used Silky Lush Sock by Desert Panda in the colorway “Pocket Full of Rainbows”. I love how the colors are dispersed throughout the cowl. I used approx. 420 yards to make this cowl.

Such a pretty colorway!

The yarn is a sock weight yarn so if you substitute, pick something that is lightweight or sock weight to work with and if you want the same color look as I acheived (the rainbow dispersed throughout), then look for a hank similar to what is pictured where you have a solid base and then all of the color is in one section.

Knitting Needles Used For Pattern

You will need circular needles for this project in a size 2mm [US-0] in 32″ around. Some of my favorite needs are made by Chia Goo. Their Stainless Steel Needles help the yarn glide like butter and the cord is made from nylon which keeps it untangled.

I’ve included some other great needles that I love below at different price points.

The Knit Picks Radiant fixed circular needles are not only beautiful, but great for beginners because they are made from wood. If you find yourself losing stitches off of your metal needles often, switch to wood, which will grip the yarn and help eliminate the problem.

If you’re starting out, a bamboo needle set is a great cost-effective choice—but if you’re serious about knitting and ready to invest, the Addi Click Set – Short Lace is in a league of its own. With sharp lace tips, smooth joins, and flexible cords, these needles make even the most intricate projects faster, easier, and more enjoyable.

Additional Supplies Needed

You will need two stitch markers I love how cute ChiaoGoo Stitch Markers are but they are also great stitch markers. They slide easily and come in many sizes in one package so you have one for every project you can think of.

The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.

Gauge For Pattern

Gauge is 4” = 17 sts and 28 rows in pattern to make the same size pictured. However, you don’t have to worry about gauge unless you want it the exact same size. Scarves are great projects for those of us (like me) who don’t enjoy having to make gauge before starting. Just be sure to note that your yardage requirements may change if you do not follow gauge.

Pin For Later

If you’re not ready to start the project yet, pin this page to head back quickly.

Finished Measurements

The finished size of the scarf (when gauge is followed) is approx. 8” wide x 56″ around.

Construction

The scarf is worked in rounds. You will use a stitch marker to keep track.
