Crochet Stitches Used For Cowl
For the cowl, you will be using mostly double crochet along with single crochet. If you are new to these stitches, click on each to be taken to a beginner tutorial that will walk you through step-by-step before you start the project.
Suggested Yarn
The cowl will use approx. 250 yards in sportweight yarn. It looks great in a solid color or use up that special variegated yarn you got at the last craft fair.

Crochet Hook Used For Pattern
You’ll need a 4 mm [US-F/G] crochet hook for this project. Look for the mm rather than the US size when shopping as different makers use a different letter for 4mm.
After testing numerous brands of crochet hooks, I’ve narrowed down my favorites. Below, you’ll find my top picks, ranked from least to most expensive.

Additional Supplies Needed
The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.
Gauge For Pattern
To achieve the same size as listed below, you will need the following gauge: 4″ = 18 STS x 20 rows in pattern. Gauge will be important to ensure the cowl is not too tight, so take the time to check before starting.
Finished Measurements
The finished cowl when gauge is followed will be 24″ around x 8″ high.

Construction
The cowl is worked in the round as one piece from the bottom up.
Abbreviations Used
- CH- chain
- DC- double crochet
- RND- round
- SC- single crochet
- ST(S)- stitch(es)
- …– pattern repeat, work the stitches contained within the asterisks across the body of the project when called for. The pattern will tell you when to stop the repeat.
Special Instructions for Pattern
- Read through the pattern before beginning.
- CH 3 counts as a DC throughout.
- Make cowl larger by adding multiples of 6 to the foundation chain

Cowl Instructions
CH 108, join RND with SL ST in 1st ST taking care to not twist stitches. 109 STS
RND 1: In 2nd CH from hook, SC in each CH around. Join RND with SL ST in 1st SC. 108 STS
RND 2: CH 1, SC in same ST as join, skip next 2 CHs, DC 7 times in next CH, skip next 2 CHs, *SC in next CH, skip next 2 CHs, DC 7 times in next CH, skip next 2 CHs; repeat from * around. Join RND with SL ST in 1st SC of RND.
RND 3: CH 3, skip next ST, *DC in next 5 STS (middle 5 of 7 from previous row), skip next 3 STS; repeat from * around to last 6 STS, DC in next 5 STS, skip last ST. Join RND with SL ST in top of CH 3.
RND 4: CH 3, DC 3 times in same ST as CH 3, skip next 2 STS, SC in next ST (middle DC of 5 DCs of row below), *skip next 2 STS, DC 7 times in space made between the groups of 5 DCs of row below, skip next 2 STS, SC in next ST; repeat from * around to last 2 STS, skip last 2 STS, DC 3 times in beginning ST that includes the CH 3 and 3 DCs. RNDs 7-21: Repeat RNDs 3-6, ending with a RND 4 repeat. This creates a flat edge for the last RND.
