This pattern is designed to be quick and easy, making it ideal for weekend projects or last-minute gifts. The bobble stitches create a beautiful texture that adds character to the cowl. Even if you’re new to these stitches, don’t worry—I’ll guide you through how to make them.

Use a softer yarn like alpaca for more muted bobbles.

Yarn Recommendations for the Petite Bobble Cowl

Choosing the right yarn can make all the difference in how your cowl turns out (as you can see from the photos above and the different texture between them). I’ve put together a list of great bulky yarn options, ranging from affordable to a bit more luxurious, so you can pick one that fits your style and budget (affiliate links below).

1. Budget-Friendly Option: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick

  • Price Range: $
  • Details: Wool-Ease Thick & Quick is a blend of acrylic and wool, which makes it both durable and warm without breaking the bank. It’s widely available and comes in a fantastic variety of colors, so you can easily find the perfect shade to match your style.
  • Why I Love It: It’s affordable and easy to work with, making it a go-to choice for beginners and seasoned crocheters alike.
  • Note: This yarn is actually classified as super bulky so this will create an even bigger cowl with bigger bobbles. Don’t be stuck in which yarn you choose, you can adjust to any size yarn by adding or subtracting chains in multiples of two to get the cowl size you want.

2. Mid-Range Option: Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Chunky

  • Price Range: $$
  • Details: This yarn is 55% Wool 33% Acrylic 12% Cashmere, which means it’s super soft but sturdy. The color options are vibrant and diverse, perfect for a project where you want the colors to really stand out.
  • Why I Love It: Cashmerino offers a smooth texture that works up beautifully, creating crisp, defined bobbles that pop against the cowl’s background.

3. High-End Option: Malabrigo Mecha

  • Price Range: $$$
  • Details: If you’re looking to splurge a little, Malabrigo Mecha is a fantastic choice. This 100% superwash merino wool yarn is known for its softness and incredible color variations. The yarn’s natural feel and luxurious texture make it worth the investment for a special project.
  • Why I Love It: The tonal and variegated colors of Malabrigo Mecha add depth to your cowl, making each piece unique and eye-catching.

Creating the Bobble Texture

One of the best features of the Petite Bobble Cowl is its texture. The bobble stitches not only add visual interest but also create a squishy, cozy feel that’s perfect for chilly weather. Crochet Hook Used For Pattern

You will need a 6.5mm [US-K] crochet hook for this project.

After testing numerous brands of crochet hooks, I’ve narrowed down my favorites. Below, you’ll find my top picks, ranked from least to most expensive.

$

Clover Soft Touch Amour crochet hooks are my absolute favorite! Their comfy, soft handles make long crochet sessions a breeze.

$$

For just slightly more money, Etimo Tulip Crochet hooks are another winner in my book. With their cushioned, ergonomic handles and smooth hooks, they make crocheting with any kind of yarn super easy.

$$$

For those of you who like to splurge, Furls Crochet hooks are beautiful hooks made from resin, wood, and metal. Their ergonomic design and polished surfaces make each stitch smooth and effortless. Treat yourself to these elegant hooks for a truly premium crochet experience.

Additional Supplies Needed

The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.

To achieve the same size as listed below, you will need the following gauge:

4”= 11 STS x 12 rows in pattern (be sure to check gauge to ensure the cowl will fit over your head.
