Slanting Squares Scarf

The Slanting Squares Scarf is one of those patterns that looks far more complex than it actually is. Built on a simple two-row repeat, it creates a subtle geometric texture that gives the illusion of shifting squares across the fabric. It works beautifully in solid yarns where the texture really shines, and it’s just as striking in self-striping yarns, where the angled stitches add movement and highlight the color changes in a really fun way.

You’ll find everything you need to crochet the scarf below, including the yarn, crochet hook, a free pattern, and a video tutorial that includes how to make it bigger. If you like this pattern, please share it!

Crochet Stitches Used For The Scarf

The stitch used throughout the scarf is double crochet with single crochet used sparingly. If you are new to crochet, I have slower video tutorials available that will walk you through working the basic double crochet and single crochet used in this pattern that you can watch before you start this project.

Yarn Selection

You will need approx. 300 yards in worsted weight yarn. Both solid and self-striping yarn look great in this stitch pattern. Below are some great options at different price points.

Brava Worsted by Knit Picks/We Crochet is a 100% premium acrylic yarn known for its softness, durability, and affordability. Each 100g skein provides 218 yards of yarn, making it suitable for afghans, garments, and accessories. The yarn is machine washable and tumble dryable, ensuring easy care for everyday use .

Knit Picks Chroma Worsted yarn is an absolute delight, especially if you’re a fan of self-striping yarns like me. This yarn boasts a soft and smooth texture, making it a pleasure to work with. Its unique color transitions create stunning stripes and gradients, ensuring that every project is a visual treat. Made from a blend of superwash wool and nylon, it offers both warmth and durability.

$$$

Knit Picks High Desert Worsted is a premium 100% American-grown wool yarn made from a luxurious blend of Merino and Merino-Rambouillet fibers. With a tight twist that delivers excellent stitch definition, it’s perfect for showcasing textured patterns and cables. The yarn comes in a beautiful palette of jewel-toned solids and rustic heathers, inspired by the high desert landscape. Soft yet durable, it’s a great choice for cozy garments and accessories.

Crochet Hook Used For Pattern

You’ll need a 5mm [US-H] crochet hook for this project. If you find the yarn on the stiff side, size up your hook to make the fabric drape better.

After testing numerous brands of crochet hooks, I’ve narrowed down my favorites. Below, you’ll find my top picks, ranked from least to most expensive.

$

Clover Soft Touch Amour crochet hooks are my absolute favorite! Their comfy, soft handles make long crochet sessions a breeze.

$$

For just slightly more money, Etimo Tulip Crochet hooks are another winner in my book. With their cushioned, ergonomic handles and smooth hooks, they make crocheting with any kind of yarn super easy.

$$$

For those of you who like to splurge, Furls Crochet hooks are beautiful hooks made from resin, wood, and metal. Their ergonomic design and polished surfaces make each stitch smooth and effortless. Treat yourself to these elegant hooks for a truly premium crochet experience.

Additional Supplies Needed

The only other thing you will need is a yarn needle to weave in the ends. My favorite yarn needles are made of metal, they are easy to slide through any yarn. I like the Susan Bates option below.

Gauge For Pattern

To achieve the same size as listed below, you will need the following gauge: 4”= 16 STS and 8 rows in pattern. For this project, achieving an exact gauge isn’t critical, so don’t worry too much about it unless you want the exact same size scarf.

Finished Measurements

If you follow the gauge with the required amount of yardage, you can expect the scarf to measure 8″ wide by 60″ long. Again, gauge is not super important unless you want the exact same-sized scarf.

Special Stitch Used in Pattern

Tall CH: This can be used instead of a beginning CH 3. You will pull up a loop as tall as a DC, then lock it in with another CH. Your first DC will be worked in the first ST of the row. The tall CH does not count as a stitch. This will eliminate the gap at the beginning of the row. See the video tutorial for more information on this.

Construction

The pattern is worked flat in rows with no border.

Abbreviations Used

CH- chain
DC- double crochet
SC- single crochet
ST(S)- stitch(es)
*…- pattern repeat, work the stitches contained within the asterisks across the body of the project when called for. The pattern will tell you when to stop the repeat.
